Deep Tissue Massage
This is a general term for a range of therapies that seek to improve the function of the body's connective tissues and/or muscles. Clients with injuries diagnosed by a physician often seek deep tissue massage as part of their treatment plan.
Deep Tissue Massage focuses on the deeper layers of muscle tissue. It aims to release the chronic patterns of tension in the body through slow strokes and deep pressure on the contracted areas, either following or going across the fibers of the muscles, tendons and fascia. A deep tissue massage is not, however, synonymous with pain. I've been trained in techniques to apply deep work in a way that doesn't cause pain. And if pain is experienced, the client is always instructed to let me know. A client experiencing pain is not able to focus on relaxing which is counter-productive to therapeutic work. So, in my experience... no pain is gain.
Deep tissue massage usually focuses on more specific areas and may cause some soreness during or right after the massage, but if it's done right the client should feel better than ever within a day or two.The technique is often used in combination with other massage procedures such as those used in Sports Massage.
